Mark Webber is an artist based in NYC and Sag Harbor. He has been steeped in visual art all of his life. Growing up in a house full of world class art (his mother was on the Acquisition Committee of MoMA), inspired by the Miro, Henry Moore and Jim Dine artworks on the walls, Mark went on to study art at Banff, Windham College and getting a BFA at SUNY Purchase. In addition to painting, sculpting and drawing, Mark is also an accomplished furniture designer and woodworker, sailor and paddler When he is not in the studio, he is drawing further inspiration from being on the water. Mark moved his family to Sag Harbor where he is able to draw from that inspiration and incorporate it in his work.
I take traditionally static forms such as rectangles, ellipse and lines and uncover subtle subtexts such as intimacy, separation and balance. The viewer is welcomed to draw their own conclusions about how a piece stands, supports itself, engages in a dialogue with the materials used. Whether it is the process or the materials, each piece finds a balance through gravity and composition.
With my collage work, the theme usually evolves around the drawn line and and string(s) andthe actual weight of each . Like the rectangle. it is a starting point based in geometry. I do my collage work much like a sculptor, thinking in 3 dimensions. There is usually at least three layers between drawing with graphite or pastel, collage, string, and/or photographs that build the dimension to the drawings. Most are constructions in the literal sense of building a drawing.
